History
Tyler, Texas was established in 1846 and named for President John Tyler. The community grew rapidly and was incorporated in 1850 with already more than 4,000 residents. Farming strengthened the early economy, as did the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s, creating a commercial center in Tyler. The discovery of oil in East Texas was another major economic stimulus in the early 1930s.
